Yesterday I got a tsste of the amazing health care system we have here in the U.S.A. The following are my notes from my experience.
I am about to be taken into a surgery suite @ UCSD Medical Center in La Jolla, California. It's only minor surgery and the problem only came to light last week. Now under a Government Health Care Program I would have to wait @ least 3 months for this procedure. However, because of the way American Health Care is run now, and has been forever I was able to get in very quickly. This was fortunate for me because my situation involves immense pain!
I am waiting in the pre-op area where I have already been prepped, had an IV placed (by an incredibly talented nurse),and my entire medical history has been reviewed, not by a computer, but by a nurse and myself. Within my sight are @ least 3 nurses and some medical assistants ready to help me in any way they can.
Soon the anesthesiologist comes in and introduces himself. In words that I can understand, he explains every thing he will be doing to me to make me get through the surgery without pain. He promises me that I WILL wake up!
Next comes one of the doctors comes in, also to introduce himself and to see if I have any questions. Because UCSD is a teaching hospital the doctor is accompanied by "fellows" (soon to be doctors). They are their to observe.
The anesthesiologist returns to administer some medication to relax me and make me less anxious before the procedure. This is the last thing I remember!
Four hours later I feel a hand on my shoulder attempting to awake me. When I finally open my eyes I see my ride,(my ex-husband-long story!), and a nurse. Apparently they were wondering if I was going to sleep forever. I guess the anesthesiologist kept his promise!
I can only imagine what my experience would have been under a Government system. Not enough nurses, doctors in a rush because they are short-handed, and in general there would be chaos.
My gratitude and thanks go out to the members of the second floor pre-op group and all of the wonderful proffessionals whom I had the privledge of their care. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
