I've made it very clear that I do have a pretty wild side & I admit to doing some crazy things in my younger days. This is a story my Aunt Rose loves to tell. Whenever we talk on the phone it always comes up & we never fail to laugh til we cry for the memory is very dear to us.
About 25 years ago Aunt Rose & Uncle Gil had come from Connecticut to California to visit my in-laws. One of the highlights of every visit was a quick trip to Las Vegas. This one particular time my own little family was invited to come along. Truth be told, we should not have been going in the first place because my husband & I barely had $40 between the two of us. Never the less, we were young and stupid so we decided to take the trip anyway. To save a few bucks I went to the deli and bought fresh rolls and cold cuts, and a couple of six packs of coke. I had plenty for all. We set out on the road following behind my in-laws. Somewhere outside of Baker, California my husband decided he was hungry so I broke out my traveling deli and proceeded to make sandwiches for everyone in our car. Lo & behold, wouldn't you know it, my aunt caught us eating while they were passing us in their car. She motioned that they were hungry too. So I made up more sandwiches for them. Now the problem arose when we realized we were traveling down the highway @ 55mph side by side. Just how were we going to get the food to them? The smart thing would be to pull over to the side of the road and stop. But that would be too easy! So brilliant me came up with a plan. My father-in-law moved his car as close as he dare to get and I rolled down the passenger window. My aunt had rolled down her window and when we were close enough together I passed my bag of sandwiches to her. Whew! I couldn't believe it worked! It was just like in the movies! Now everything would have been just fine except Rose got a little greedy and wanted something to drink. I figured it worked once so so I threw 4 sodas into another bag and we moved in close once again. This time was a little more difficult because the sodas were heavier so I pushed the upper part of my body out of the window and proceeded to try again. Remember, we were traveling @ 55mph and it was windy. We did manage to make the hand-off but OOPS! When I turned my head to pull my body back into the car the wind caught my glasses and pulled them right off my face! As I looked back through my very myopic eyes I saw a semi roll right over them! We went back to look for them and all we found was one of the lenses.(They said the lenses were unbreakable!) Needless to say that was one trip to Vegas that was a losing proposition even before we hit Nevada!
