The other night my little brother and I were talking and we started comparing ourselves @ 50+ to our parents @ the same age. At 50 my mother was still working @ least 5 days a week ,sometimes 6, and up to 50 hours in the same time period. Both her and my father were electronic technicians for Teledyne Ryan in San Diego and they had been part of many of the NASA projects.
My father, on the other hand, being medically disabled had retired @ age 50. He had not only worked for Teledyne Ryan but he was an assistant pastor and youth minister for a church in Crest, California up in the hills above El Cajon. He had tried to start his own small business after he retired by joining in to the "Sta- Power" organization but unfortunately that turned out to be one big pyramid scheme which I guess could be considered a bit like "Bernie Madoff's" Ponzi Scheme. Both of them were rip-offs stealing millions of dollars from unsuspecting good people. After his failed attempt @ his own business, (through really no fault of his own!), he completely retired to his Lazy Boy chair sitting in front of the TV watching news stations day and night and chain smoking along with drinking pots of very black coffee. He was a recovering alcoholic and had been in Korea in Special Op's so he dealt with a lot of mental issues also. At age 32 he suffered his first major heart attack and by 65 he was hit with another one. After that one he received one of the first heart defibrillator implants in the world. But, getting back to his Lazy Boy and his TV, he spent most of his time screaming @ the news and the crooked politicians, and how the world was going to Hell-In-A-Hand-Basket!!!!
After reminiscing for a while my brother, who is 50 and still works up to 80 hours a week, turned to me where I was sitting in MY Lazy Boy chair and smiled, and both of us came to the same conclusion. OH MY GOD! WE HAD TURNED INTO OUR PARENTS!
Maybe all those times I've been @ death's door, the reason I have stayed in this world was to finally give Daddy a voice and an outlet for his frustration @ the "crooked politicians" and what he felt was the downfall of America as we know it today. So, in retrospect I guess I really am MY FATHER'S DAUGHTER!
